This was largely due to outlays which climbed 7% while revenue rose a mere 1%.<\/p>\n<p>Today at 2pm we got official confirmation of the rapid expansion in the US budget deficit when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiscal.treasury.gov\/fsreports\/rpt\/mthTreasStmt\/mts0918.pdf\">Treasury announced <\/a>that in Trumps first full fiscal year as president, <strong>the U.S.\u00a0budget deficit\u00a0grew 17% to $779 billion from $666 billion&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/fiscal%202017%20and%202081.jpg?itok=v4oFRW_J\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/fiscal%202017%20and%202081.jpg?itok=v4oFRW_J\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/fiscal%202017%20and%202081.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/fiscal%202017%20and%202081.jpg?itok=v4oFRW_J 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"299\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"e9038cf3-f7b9-4dad-9e84-bb1f3fe9219f\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; the highest full year total since 2012 amid tax cuts and spending increases, if below the trailing 12 month total as of August which, as noted above, was a whopping $895 billion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/budget%20deficit%20oct%202018.jpg?itok=rayYChkH\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/budget%20deficit%20oct%202018.jpg?itok=rayYChkH\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/budget%20deficit%20oct%202018.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/budget%20deficit%20oct%202018.jpg?itok=rayYChkH 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"311\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"ec03cf1d-8eca-4469-9901-f037a676361d\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The budget gap for the 12 month period ended September was 17% greater than the same 12-month period a year earlier, as spending rose 3.2% and revenue gained just 0.4%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/government%20receipts%20oct%202018.jpg?itok=0g2nTpK-\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/government%20receipts%20oct%202018.jpg?itok=0g2nTpK-\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/government%20receipts%20oct%202018.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/government%20receipts%20oct%202018.jpg?itok=0g2nTpK- 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"2d69d7a9-6114-4a88-95f9-c7c25fb07183\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The deficit as a share of GDP was 3.9% in fiscal 2018, up 0.4% point from the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>To fund this deficit, the U.S. government borrowed $1.08 trillion from the public in Fiscal 2018, <strong>more than double the amount borrowed in 2017 <\/strong>($498.3 billion) and the most borrowed from the public in a fiscal year since FY&#8217;12.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/bugdet%20oct%202018.jpg?itok=GBbfIIXr\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/bugdet%20oct%202018.jpg?itok=GBbfIIXr\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/bugdet%20oct%202018.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/bugdet%20oct%202018.jpg?itok=GBbfIIXr 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"416\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"22fb9b79-91c9-4023-829c-456980f14f89\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was some good news: contrary to more pessimistic expectations, the <em>surplus <\/em>for the fiscal year&#8217;s final month of September jumped to $119 billion, the largest windfall for the last month of any fiscal year on record.
