‘Vast Blind Spot’: IPCC Accused of Ignoring ‘Decades Long’ Fossil Fuel Misinformation Campaign on Climate<\/a><\/h3>\n

The United Nations (UN<\/span>) climate science panel is being accused of ignoring research into fossil fuel-funded misinformation campaigns that have been key to holding back action on global\u00a0warming.<\/p>\n

The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u00a0(IPCC<\/span>)<\/a> \u2014 an assessment of more than 6,000 research papers \u2014 found global warming caused largely by fossil fuel burning would have severe impacts even if limited to 1.5\u00b0C\u00a0(2.7\u00b0F).<\/p>\n

Described by the IPCC<\/span><\/a> as \u201cone of the most important climate change reports ever published,\u201d\u00a0the report is designed to inform policy makers and the public around the\u00a0world.<\/p>\n

But several researchers are angry the report did not take account of academic research into the \u201cdecades-long misinformation campaign\u201d funded and promoted by fossil fuel interests and so-called \u201cfree market\u201d conservative think tanks that has been a major brake on\u00a0progress.<\/p>\n

Several researchers say the lack of consideration of academic research into misinformation campaigns was a vital but missed opportunity to educate the public and policy makers.\u00a0The groups that have colluded with the fossil fuel industry have been credited with pushing President Donald Trump<\/a> to pledge to pull the U.S.<\/span> from the UN<\/span>‘s Paris\u00a0Agreement.<\/p>\n

A Vast Blind\u00a0Spot<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>This is an important barrier to climate action, but it is never addressed,\u201d said Professor Robert Brulle\u00a0of Drexel University, who has published research on the funding<\/a> and influence of climate science denial\u00a0efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>A large existing literature on this was ignored by the IPCC<\/span>,\u201d he\u00a0added.<\/p>\n

The IPCC<\/span> special report showed that keeping global warming to 1.5\u00b0C would require a rapid phase-out of fossil fuel use between now and the middle of the\u00a0century.<\/p>\n
