Is the U.S. in a Pre-Fascist Period?<\/a><\/h3>\n

Since Pres. Donald Trump\u2019s election, a variety of well-intentioned commentators have raised a chorus of concern that the U.S. was entering \u2013 or is in \u2013 a per-fascist period.\u00a0\u00a0If so, what is to be done?\u00a0\u00a0If not, what does the Trump presidency \u2013 and the conservative, religious right and corporatists who back him \u2013 signify in terms of the coming of \u201cfascism\u201d to American?<\/p>\n

The radical filmmaker \u2013 and media showman \u2013 Michael Moore<\/a> is among the latest to warn about the emergence of a pre-fascist state.\u00a0\u00a0As part of efforts to promote his latest film,\u00a0Fahrenheit 11\/9<\/em>, he has appeared on\u00a0Democracy Now!<\/em>, various MSNBC shows and other outlets often quoting from\u00a0Bertram Gross\u2019s 1980 book,\u00a0Friendly Fascism: The New Face of Power in America<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1980): \u201cThe next wave of fascism will come not with cattle cars and camps. It will come with a friendly face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Overlooked by Moore, Gross was revising William Shirer, author of\u00a0The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1960), more ominous quote<\/a>: \u201cPerhaps America will one day go fascist democratically, by popular vote.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moore\u2019s concern is shared by Madeleine Albright, Pres. Clinton\u2019s secretary of state, Democratic Party stalwart, faithful Hillary Clinton backer and, as a\u00a0Czechoslovakian child,\u00a0survived the early German occupation.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0Fascism: A Warning<\/em><\/a>, she notes,\u00a0\u201cEvery age has its own fascism.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Drawing a wider, more global, picture than Moore, she sees fascist tendencies<\/a> on the rise in governments in Russia,the Philippines, Hungary and Poland as well as Egypt, North Korea, Turkey and Venezuela.\u00a0\u00a0With regards to the U.S., she is caution, noting that Pres. Trump is not a fascist but \u201cthe most anti-democratic leader that I have studied in American history.\u201d<\/p>\n
