Though Pentagon officials are downplaying this and prior such incidents, <strong>it demonstrates just how fast\u00a0the currently escalating trade war could easily translate into a potential military &#8220;mishap&#8221; between the two countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"22\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/B-52.jpg?itok=uKVprscl\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/B-52.jpg?itok=uKVprscl\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/B-52.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/B-52.jpg?itok=uKVprscl 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"328\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"25a8c5dd-119b-41d4-80c1-b1909e619d77\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"22\"><strong><em>&#8220;Regarding the provocative actions of US military aircraft in the South China Sea, we are always resolutely opposed to them, and will continue to take necessary measures in order to strongly handle (this issue),&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> Chinese defense ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said before reporters, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/us-b-52s-fly-over-south-east-china-203756967.html\">AFP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"22\">A Pentagon spokesman quickly shot back, rejecting Chinese territorial claims which interpret its expanding man-made island chains as a natural\u00a0extension of its sovereign space.\u00a0The\u00a0flights were part of &#8220;regularly scheduled operations,&#8221; said\u00a0Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Dave Eastburn.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"22\">The Pentagon further confirmed that its heavy bombers are operating in the area as part of combined exercises with Japan over the East and South China seas, and that flights were being conducted over recognized international airspace.
