The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/world\/united-states-canada\/article\/2164608\/trumps-top-economic-adviser-calls-china-global\" target=\"_self\" shape=\"rect\">10 per cent tariffs<\/a> on US$200 billion of Chinese goods, rising to 25 per cent from January 1, is the final straw. There will be more negotiations to come. At some point, there may be announcements of compromises and a positive outlook. But, for now, the reality is that China and the US have gone into rivalry mode \u2013 a rivalry that will define the 21st century.<span class=\"c1 text-only\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"v2-processed\">The dispute began with US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/donald-trump\" target=\"_self\" shape=\"rect\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s complaints about the bilateral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/trade\" target=\"_self\" shape=\"rect\">trade<\/a> balance and access to China\u2019s market. It then morphed into a dispute on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/intellectual-property-china\" target=\"_self\" shape=\"rect\">intellectual property<\/a> rights violations and China\u2019s economic model of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/business\/global-economy\/article\/2151177\/real-target-trumps-trade-war-made-china-2025\" target=\"_self\" shape=\"rect\">subsidising technology development<\/a>. Now, it is about global strategic rivalry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"v2-processed link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/comment\/insight-opinion\/united-states\/article\/2163824\/quality-counts-why-chinese-companies-need\" target=\"_self\" shape=\"rect\">Beyond the trade war: how Chinese companies can survive the next decade<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"v2-processed\">The US\u2019 contention is that China makes money from the US and is using it to push America out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/asia\" target=\"_self\" shape=\"rect\">Asia<\/a> and elsewhere. It is difficult to see how the US could climb down from this position. To follow its rhetoric, it will try to cut off China from its market and block <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\" target=\"_self\" shape=\"rect\">technology<\/a> exchanges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"v2-processed\">This rivalry may bring short-term pain to both nations, and to the world, but it may prove beneficial to all in the long run.<\/p>\n<div class=\"methode-html-wrapper v2-processed no-float\">\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload-processed loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/multimedia.scmp.com\/widgets\/china\/china-us-economy\/index.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-original=\"https:\/\/multimedia.scmp.com\/widgets\/china\/china-us-economy\/index.html\" data-ignore=\"true\" data-spm-act-id=\"0.0.0.i3.63fa2e38eTJhuE\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"v2-processed\">The lack of external checks has led to rising internal imbalances in both countries.
