The court ultimately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hudoc.echr.coe.int\/eng#%7B%22itemid%22:[%22001-186048%22]%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0that these activities violate the family and privacy rights of British and European citizens, and this assertion ultimately includes a rejection of the United States\u2019 activities considering GCHQ has obtained much of its data from the NSA.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hudoc.echr.coe.int\/eng-press#%7B%22itemid%22:[%22003-6187848-8026299%22]%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suit<\/a>\u00a0was brought by Amnesty International, Big Brother Watch, the ACLU, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, and other civil liberties groups. It addresses provisions of the U.K.\u2019s 2000 Investigatory Powers Act, and though a new version of the law was passed in 2016 and is yet to be enacted, many of the issues the court identified remain in the 2016 bill.<\/p>\n<p>Though the court stopped short of saying intelligence\u00a0<i>sharing<\/i>\u00a0between agencies like GCHQ, NSA, and members of the \u201cFive Eyes\u201d spying alliance violate the human rights convention, it said \u201c<i>using such intelligence sharing to bypass restrictions on surveillance of a member state\u2019s own citizens would be a violation of the charter<\/i>,\u201d\u00a0<i>Ars Technica\u00a0<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2018\/09\/bulk-interception-by-gchq-and-nsa-violated-human-rights-charter-european-court-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summarized<\/a>.
