However, the tables may be turning: Water itself now poses a risk to the already failing financial model of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2018\/04\/18\/finances-great-american-fracking-bubble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American fracking industry<\/a>,\u00a0and that is something\u00a0the industry won\u2019t be able to\u00a0ignore.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>The <span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span> is setting new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-us-just-broke-another-oil-record-2018-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oil production records<\/a>\u00a0as horizontal drilling and fracking open up shale deposits in places like North Dakota and\u00a0Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Fracking is based on the \u201chydraulic\u201d process of using pressurized liquid to shatter shale rock\u00a0to let the oil and gas inside escape. And while that liquid is a mixture of many hazardous chemicals, it is mostly water. And acquiring that water and then properly disposing of the toxic wastewater produced by fracking is becoming a big and expensive problem for\u00a0the\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel Collins is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerinstitute.org\/experts\/gabe-collins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a fellow in energy and the environment<\/a> at Rice University, and\u00a0in August he gave a presentation\u00a0at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.producedwaterevents.com\/permian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Produced Water Society Permian Basin 2018 <\/a>event in Midland, Texas.
