{"id":37851,"date":"2018-09-16T08:18:25","date_gmt":"2018-09-16T13:18:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=37851"},"modified":"2018-09-16T08:18:25","modified_gmt":"2018-09-16T13:18:25","slug":"trump-to-announce-200-billion-in-new-china-tariffs-as-soon-as-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=37851","title":{"rendered":"Trump To Announce $200 Billion In New China Tariffs As Soon As Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"block-zerohedge-page-title\" class=\"block block-core block-page-title-block\">\n<h3 class=\"page-title\"><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-09-15\/trump-announce-200-billion-new-china-tariffs-soon-monday\">Trump To Announce $200 Billion In New China Tariffs As Soon As Monday<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-zerohedge-content\" class=\"block block-system block-system-main-block\">\n<article class=\"node node--type-article node--view-mode-full\" role=\"article\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-2077925_22=\"1239\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-2077925_22=\"1239\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-2077925_22=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-2077925_22=\"1\">\n<div class=\"node__content\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>In the latest installment of the story that just won&#8217;t go away, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/trump-to-announce-new-tariffs-on-200-billion-in-china-goods-1537040325?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">WSJ reported <\/a>on Saturday that &#8211; as Bloomberg reported first yesterday &#8211; the Trump administration plans to announce new tariffs on up to $200 billion in Chinese goods as soon as Monday and otherwise &#8220;within days&#8221;, in a move that will likely render moot the high-level, U.S.-China talks set for later this month, will prompt an immediate retaliation from China, and may lead to a sharply lower futures open on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>The silver lining in the imminent announcement is that while previously Trump had said he would proceed with a 25% tariff level, the WSJ reports that the US will start with tariffs of &#8220;around 10%.&#8221; The level was lowered &#8220;following extensive public hearings and the submission of written comments where importers and others complained of the possible impact of the duties&#8221; as well as to try to reduce the bite on American consumers ahead of the year-end holiday shopping season, these people said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the people familiar said that <strong>the tariff level could be raised back to 25% if Mr. Trump concludes that Beijing doesn\u2019t soon show signs that it is acceding to U.S. demands to change its economic policies<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Furthermore, WSJ sources said that while details were still being completed over the weekend, the tariff level could change, or that Trump could change his mind entirely. <strong>As of Saturday, an announcement was planned for Monday or Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recall last week Deutsche Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-09-10\/when-will-us-finally-feal-pain-trade-wars-one-bank-answers\">calculated <\/a>that so far the US had carefully avoided consumer and China dependent products, and as a result, the trade war so far has had little impact on US economy and consumers.
