Russian Media Irritates French Government: Curbing Press Freedom<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

The\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0titled Information Manipulation: a Challenge for\u00a0Our Democracies prepared by\u00a0two government-linked think tanks \u2013 the French Foreign Ministry\u2019s Center for\u00a0Analysis, Planning and Strategy (CAPS) and the Defense Ministry\u2019s Institute for\u00a0Strategic Studies (IRSEM) \u2013 saw light on Sept.4. The paper urges the French government to\u00a0\u201cname and isolate\u201d\u00a0outlets that act as \u201cforeign propaganda organs.\u201d It suggests that journalists of Russian RT and Sputnik news outlets should not be accredited or invited to press conferences. \u201cIt\u2019s important never to grant [these organizations] accreditation rather than to invite them to press conferences for journalists,\u201d the document states.<\/p>\n

Moscow is the prime target of the efforts to curb freedom of speech. The 200-page long report mentions Russia 60 times, the word Kremlin is used 48 times, Sputnik is referred to 14 times and RT is also not forgotten with the abbreviation repeated 10 times. The authors say they express personal opinions but it\u2019s hard to believe it as they work for the government.<\/p>\n

The French administration has demonstrated its hostile attitude toward the Russian outlets a number of times. Last year, President Emmanuel Macron\u00a0accused<\/a>\u00a0them of having spoken \u201cmistruths\u201d about him and his campaign behaving not as \u201cmedia outlets and journalists\u201d but as \u201corgans of influence, propaganda, and false propaganda.\u201d That\u2019s what he affirms though not a single example of spreading misinformation by the\u00a0Russian<\/a>\u00a0media<\/a>\u00a0outlets has ever been provided.<\/p>\n

The activities of Russian journalists in France are often\u00a0obstructed<\/a>. It\u2019s not unusual for them to become\u00a0victims of harassment<\/a>. For instance, when RT France channel started to broadcast last December, 11 French public figures\u00a0called on<\/a>\u00a0the county\u2019s broadcasting watchdog Conseil superieur de l\u2019audiovisuel (CSA) to\u00a0recall its license.<\/p>\n
