Why Greece\u2019s Spillover Across Euro Area Will Probably Be Contained This Time – Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Greece<\/a>\u2019s flirtation with an exit from the euro in 2011 and two cliffhanger elections in 2012 prompted the darkest days of the debt crisis, halted only by the\u00a0European Central Bank<\/a>\u2019s pledge to save the currency come what may.<\/p>\n

Now, with the collapse of another Greek government,\u00a0Europe<\/a>\u2019s leaders, its more vulnerable economies and financial markets are better prepared. While euro in-or-out threats will echo through the Greek election campaign, the spillover across Europe this time is likely to be contained.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking at a Greece problem — the euro crisis is over,\u201d\u00a0Holger Schmieding<\/a>, chief economist at Berenberg Bank inLondon<\/a>, said by phone. \u201cThe euro crisis was all about contagion risk. I do not expect markets to seriously contest the contagion defenses of Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Investor reaction to the Greek parliament\u2019s failure to pick a president traced the familiar north-south divide. Greek stocks and bonds plunged and markets were buffeted in\u00a0Italy<\/a>,\u00a0Portugal<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Spain<\/a>, while funds flowed into\u00a0Germany<\/a>, Europe\u2019s biggest economy and hard-money bastion.<\/p>\n
