Stiglitz &#8211; Project Syndicate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px;\" data-line-id=\"e2b1da07a16446ca8b318f4dc49249f7\">NEW YORK \u2013 Two new studies show, once again, the magnitude of the inequality problem plaguing the United States. The first, the US Census Bureau\u2019s annual\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; color: inherit; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/content\/dam\/Census\/library\/publications\/2014\/demo\/p60-249.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">income and poverty report<\/a>, shows that, despite the economy\u2019s supposed recovery from the Great Recession, ordinary Americans\u2019 incomes continue to stagnate. Median household income, adjusted for inflation, remains below its level a quarter-century ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px;\" data-line-id=\"ecc5ce7f07314470b3750e38039e600c\">It used to be thought that America\u2019s greatest strength was not its military power, but an economic system that was the envy of the world. But why would others seek to emulate an economic model by which a large proportion \u2013 even a majority \u2013 of the population has seen their income stagnate while incomes at the top have soared?<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px;\" data-line-id=\"4379572cc60741438ce568ae6845c4f9\">A second study, the United Nations Development Program\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; color: inherit; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/hdr.undp.org\/sites\/default\/files\/hdr14-report-en-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Human Development Report 2014<\/a>, corroborates these findings.
