Overnight saw Hurricane Lane\u00a0churn<\/a> slowly toward Hawaii as 1.4 million people brace for the U.S. Pacific island state\u2019s worst storm in a quarter century.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The storm is moving northwest to the Hawaiian islands at 7 miles per hour with sustained winds of 130 miles per hour, and forecasters say it\u2019s \u201con course to pass very close\u201d to the islands or make landfall from Thursday through early Saturday.<\/p>\n

It could be so disastrous that state officials are asking residents to stockpile food and water for several weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe prepared to shelter in place with 14 days of food supplies and water and any other necessities,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Hawaii Gov. David Ige said at a press conference Wednesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cPreparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion,\u201d the National Weather Service said. \u201cLife-threatening impacts are likely in some areas as the hurricane makes its closest approach.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLane \u2013 classified as a powerful Category 4 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane strength \u2013 was expected to hit the Big Island overnight and slam the island of Maui on Thursday,\u201d according to\u00a0Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To the north, Oahu was under a hurricane warning while Kauai remained on hurricane watch meaning it could face similar conditions starting Friday morning.<\/p>\n

Governor David Ige requested for a President Disaster Declaration for the State of Hawaii on Wednesday. Washington shortly approved it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n
