{"id":36888,"date":"2018-08-21T09:36:59","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T14:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=36888"},"modified":"2018-08-21T09:36:59","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T14:36:59","slug":"fracking-wastewater-spikes-1440-in-half-decade-adding-to-dry-regions-water-woes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=36888","title":{"rendered":"Fracking Wastewater Spikes 1,440% in Half Decade, Adding to Dry Regions\u2019 Water Woes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2018\/08\/15\/duke-1440-fracking-wastewater-permian-shale-water-demand\">Fracking Wastewater Spikes 1,440% in Half Decade, Adding to Dry Regions\u2019 Water Woes<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-13125 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-bimage field-type-image field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/Pumpjack024.jpg?itok=Cy3WiK0q\" alt=\"Permian Basin, Texas, pumpjacks\" width=\"826\" height=\"586\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"new-horizontal-social-bar clearfix\">\n<div class=\"new-horizontal-share-wrapper new-horizontal-fb-wrapper clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"new-horizontal-share-wrapper new-horizontal-email-wrapper clearfix last\">Between 2011 and 2016, fracked oil and gas wells in the <span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span> pumped out record-breaking amounts of wastewater, which is laced with toxic and radioactive materials, a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-08-fracking-risen-percent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new Duke University <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-08-fracking-risen-percent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-08-fracking-risen-percent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> concludes<\/a>.\u00a0The amount of wastewater from fracking rose 1,440 percent during that\u00a0period.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>Over the same time, the total amount of water used for fracking rose roughly half as much, 770 percent, according to the paper published today in the journal <em>Science Advances<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Previous studies suggested hydraulic fracturing does not use significantly more water than other energy sources, but those findings were based only on aggregated data from the early years of fracking,\u201d Avner Vengosh, professor of geochemistry and water quality at Duke\u2019s Nicholas School of the Environment, said in a statement. \u201cAfter more than a decade of fracking operation, we now have more years of data to draw upon from multiple verifiable\u00a0sources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers predict that spike in water use will continue to\u00a0climb.<\/p>\n<p>And over the next dozen years, they say the amount of water used could grow up to 50 times higher when fracking for shale gas and 20 times higher when fracking for oil\u00a0\u2014 should\u00a0prices rise. The paper, titled \u201cThe Intensification of the Water Footprint of Hydraulic Fracturing,\u201d was based on a study conducted with funding from the National Science\u00a0Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Even if prices and drilling rates remain at current levels, our models still predict a large increase by 2030 in both water use and wastewater production,\u201d said Andrew J.
