The island is world renowned for its sea\u00a0shells but that day we were watching\u00a0employees from the Sanibel Moorings Resort pull a sheet over a dead loggerhead sea turtle on the beach behind the hotel. One of the men\u00a0covering the turtle said that people had seen it long enough, and he\u00a0didn\u2019t want it to\u00a0scare\u00a0kids.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>I think it is better if kids see what we are doing to the\u00a0planet,\u201d Womble told me. \u201cMaybe seeing the dead turtle will make them pay\u00a0attention to the environment.\u201d Her 9-year-old sister\u00a0Ellie agreed, adding that \u201ccovering the turtle won\u2019t stop other turtles\u00a0from\u00a0dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier that day the sisters had been on a charter fishing boat 10 miles\u00a0off Sanibel Island\u2019s coast, where they saw lots of dead fish, large and small, and another dead sea turtle floating on the Gulf of Mexico\u2019s surface.
