Doomed US Pensions&#8217; Shortfall Now The Size Of Japan&#8217;s Economy<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-zerohedge-content\" class=\"block block-system block-system-main-block\">\n<article class=\"node node--type-article node--view-mode-full\" role=\"article\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-2077925_22=\"1459\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-2077925_22=\"1459\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-2077925_22=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-2077925_22=\"1\">\n<div class=\"node__content\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Scores of public pensions\u00a0across the United States are so massively underfunded that the shortfall is roughly equal to Japan&#8217;s GDP &#8211; the world&#8217;s third-largest economy, according to Moody&#8217;s Investors Service.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>State and local pension plans in the U.S. now have less than three- quarters of the money they need to meet their promised payouts<\/strong>, their lowest level since at least 2001, according to Public Plans Database figures weighted by plan size. <strong>In dollar terms the hole for state and local pensions is now $5 trillion<\/strong>, according to Moody\u2019s Investors Service.\u00a0&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-pension-hole-for-u-s-cities-and-states-is-the-size-of-japans-economy-1532972501\">WSJ<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If governments don&#8217;t increase taxes, convince pensioners to take less than they were promised or divert funds from elsewhere, an increasing number of funds <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/pension-funds-still-making-promises-they-probably-cant-keep-1525775400?mod=article_inline\">face insolvency<\/a><\/b>, reports the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-pension-hole-for-u-s-cities-and-states-is-the-size-of-japans-economy-1532972501\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/climbing%20costs.png?itok=T_UwlRxq\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/climbing%20costs.png?itok=T_UwlRxq\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/climbing%20costs.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/climbing%20costs.png?itok=T_UwlRxq 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"b6eb592b-8358-4050-8447-9b2648893834\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Kentucky, for example, a major pension for state employees had around\u00a0<strong>16% of what it needs to fulfill its obligations<\/strong> based on 2017 fiscal year figures, according to the Public Plans database which tracks state and local pension funds. A Chicago municipal employee fund had\u00a0<strong>less than 30% of what it needed\u00a0<\/strong>during the same fiscal year, while <b>New Jersey&#8217;s state pension is so underfunded it faces insolvency in 12 years\u00a0<\/b>according to a Pew Charitable Trusts Study.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/illinois.png?itok=MXVU9_0A\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/illinois.png?itok=MXVU9_0A\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/illinois.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/inline_image_desktop\/public\/inline-images\/illinois.png?itok=MXVU9_0A 1x\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"398\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"b53039e5-200a-475c-87cc-e9ecf73463e5\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For an example of what happens when a pension hits a brick wall, look no further than Central Falls, Rhode Island &#8211; a city of 19,359 which was forced to cut monthly checks to retired police and firefighters by as much as 55% as the entire town tried to stave off bankruptcy.
