{"id":3584,"date":"2014-12-27T08:25:29","date_gmt":"2014-12-27T13:25:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=3584"},"modified":"2014-12-27T08:25:29","modified_gmt":"2014-12-27T13:25:29","slug":"bloom-lake-hit-with-record-environmental-fine-business-cbc-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=3584","title":{"rendered":"Bloom Lake hit with record environmental fine &#8211; Business &#8211; CBC News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/bloom-lake-hit-with-record-environmental-fine-1.2883601\">Bloom Lake hit with record environmental fine &#8211; Business &#8211; CBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px; line-height: 1.35em;\">A mining company has plead guilty to 45 charges under the fisheries act and will pay a $7.5-million fine for improperly releasing pollutants into fish-bearing waters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px; line-height: 1.35em;\">Bloom Lake General Partner Ltd. has been ordered to pay the fine because\u00a0the Triangle Tailings Pond dam breach in May 2011 and other environmental accidents over a period of 18 months, Environment Canada said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px; line-height: 1.35em;\">The iron ore mine is\u00a0located southwest of Labrador City but is in Quebec.\u00a0In one instance, more than\u00a014,500\u00a0litres of ferric\u00a0sulfate\u00a0was dumped\u00a0into water frequented by fish. &#8220;On a number of occasions,&#8221; Environment Canada said in a release Wednesday, &#8220;the company did not inform the Department of releases, contrary to regulatory requirements and omitted to take samples and conduct analyses as required under the regulations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px; line-height: 1.35em;\">Of the total fine,\u00a0$6.83\u00a0million\u00a0will be directed to a federal government fund that&#8217;s aimed at making sure those who cause environmental damage or harm to wildlife take responsibility for their actions by supporting projects that benefit the\u00a0environment. That&#8217;s the biggest amount that a Canadian company has ever been ordered to contribute to that fund.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 0px; line-height: 1.35em;\">The mining operation\u00a0was supposed to be expanding following a $5-billion deal in which the company changed hands.\u00a0But earlier this year, the U.S.-based owner,\u00a0Cliffs Natural Resources, cancelled those plans because of plunging commodity prices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bloom Lake hit with record environmental fine &#8211; Business &#8211; CBC News.
