{"id":35629,"date":"2018-06-29T08:53:38","date_gmt":"2018-06-29T13:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=35629"},"modified":"2018-06-29T08:53:38","modified_gmt":"2018-06-29T13:53:38","slug":"the-biggest-monetary-experiments-in-history-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=35629","title":{"rendered":"The Biggest Monetary Experiments In History: Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/2018\/06\/the-biggest-monetary-experiments-in-history-part-2\/\">The Biggest Monetary Experiments In History: Part 2<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>In part one we discussed the troubling issues in Europe (in case you missed it, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalistexploits.at\/2018\/06\/the-biggest-monetary-experiments-in-history-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read it here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2026 Japan<\/p>\n<p>The story of Japan is really a story that begins with <strong>globalisation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ind\">According to the Oxford Dictionary, globalisation is described as: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span class=\"ind\">\u201cThe process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"exg\">It is, in a nutshell, international trade, and one of the things it\u2019s done is add huge swathes of the global workforce to the world\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"exg\">I bring up globalisation because of what it\u2019s done to the global labour supply.<\/p>\n<p>Realise this labour supply wasn\u2019t Joe-middle-class-Sixpack with a Beemer, a two story house in the suburbs, and a white picket fence.<\/p>\n<p>When most people think of \u00a0this workforce, they picture small brown people in shabby clothes toiling in sweatshops in China, India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc.<\/p>\n<p>And by and large that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not talking about Joe Sixpack. No, this was Amit in Bangladesh with 45 kids, working 29 hours a day, and paid the equivalent of a Happy Meal at Mackers.<\/p>\n<p>And when we got such a massive disparity in costs, market forces went to work and did what market forces do.<\/p>\n<p>The supply of goods produced exploded, and the cost of labour on a relative global basis fell.<\/p>\n<p>I guess we could call this a labour supply shock, and what this did was it helped keep wages suppressed in developed markets while those in developing markets rose. This is how Amit raised his living standard so he can afford his 5th wife.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20173\" src=\"https:\/\/3lrofj3556kl9zu0p27yma51-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/globalisation.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3lrofj3556kl9zu0p27yma51-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/globalisation.jpg 472w, https:\/\/3lrofj3556kl9zu0p27yma51-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/globalisation-123x125.jpg 123w, https:\/\/3lrofj3556kl9zu0p27yma51-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/globalisation-294x300.jpg 294w\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"408\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, the flip side of suppressed wages in the developed world was, of course, ever cheaper imported goods as the cost of those has plummeted.
