{"id":35514,"date":"2018-06-26T07:50:51","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T12:50:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=35514"},"modified":"2018-06-26T07:50:51","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T12:50:51","slug":"derailed-oil-train-spills-230000-gallons-of-tar-sands-in-flooded-iowa-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=35514","title":{"rendered":"Derailed Oil Train Spills 230,000 Gallons of Tar Sands in Flooded Iowa River"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2018\/06\/25\/oil-train-derailment-doon-iowa-bnsf-230000-gallons-oil-flooded-river\">Derailed Oil Train Spills 230,000 Gallons of Tar Sands in Flooded Iowa River<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-13011 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-bimage field-type-image field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/iowa-oil-train-spill_credit-cbcnews-screenshot.png?itok=1gZPLf5t\" alt=\"Iowa oil train spill and derailment\" width=\"826\" height=\"406\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>On June 22, a\u00a0train carrying Canadian crude oil <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcci.com\/article\/cause-of-iowa-derailment-oil-spill-amount-still-a-mystery\/21878834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">derailed in northwestern Iowa<\/a>, releasing an estimated 230,000 gallons of oil into a flooded river.\u00a0As a result of the derailment, over 30 rail tank cars ended up\u00a0in the water, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/nation-world\/sns-bc-us--oil-train-spill-iowa-20180623-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14 cars confirmed <\/a>to have leaked\u00a0oil.<\/p>\n<p>To put the size of this spill in perspective, an Enbridge pipeline that leaked in Michigan in July 2010 released <a href=\"http:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/20072016\/enbridge-saga-end-department-justice-fine-epa-kalamazoo-river-michigan-dilbit-spill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roughly 1,000,000 gallons of tar sands oil into the Kalamazoo River<\/a>. Cleanup for this spill, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/03052018\/enbridge-fined-tar-sands-oil-pipeline-inspections-kalamazoo-michigan-dilbit-spill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of the largest inland oil spills on\u00a0record<\/a>, took years and more than $1\u00a0billion.<\/p>\n<p>Like the Kalamazoo River spill, the\u00a0train that derailed in Iowa was carrying tar sands oil from Alberta,\u00a0Canada.<\/p>\n<p>This crash, near Doon, Iowa, also is the first one involving the <a href=\"http:\/\/ktul.com\/news\/nation-world\/cause-of-iowa-derailment-oil-spill-amount-still-under-wraps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new, safer <span class=\"caps\">DOT<\/span>-117R tank cars<\/a> that promised to make oil safer to transport by rail.
