I feel this way, too.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content clearfix\">\n<p>As I&#8217;ve written recently, I observe this is due more than anything else to a widespread <u>demoralization<\/u> society is suffering from.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly the statistics reflect this. Suicides in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2018\/05\/24\/mapping-the-rising-tide-of-suicide-deaths-across-the-united-states\/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.5d196c024a32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US are up 30% since the turn of the millennium<\/a>, obesity is at <a href=\"https:\/\/stateofobesity.org\/obesity-rates-trends-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">epidemic proportions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/an-update-on-the-two-americas-1510784348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mortality rates are rising<\/a>\u00a0especially among white working-class Americans, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/3\/6\/16453530\/america-opioid-crisis-epidemic-bacterial-endocarditis-hepatitis-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our national opioid addiction<\/a>\u00a0is now the \u201cepidemic of epidemics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To these we can also add falling birthrates and the truly startling shift towards a younger age for the onset of depression;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newint.org\/columns\/essays\/2016\/04\/01\/psycho-spiritual-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declining from age 30 now to age\u202614<\/a>(!)<\/p>\n<p>When an organism gives up on self-care, breeding, or its will to live, it&#8217;s suffering from a tremendous amount of strain that is cutting it off from its own life force.\u00a0 A dispirited lion wasting away in a cage has a lot in common with the average American today.<\/p>\n<p>At a deep level, what ails us is not a host of unrelated, intractable problems, but the fact that our model of pursuing eternal economic growth simply isn&#8217;t working anymore. It doesn\u2019t work for the planet\u2019s increasingly strained ecosystems, nor does it work for the bottom 99% of folks in society (i.e., the non-elites).<\/p>\n<p>The various health epidemics noted above are merely symptoms of a larger acute spiritual crisis.<\/p>\n<p>But viewed at a certain angle, this may be a good sign.<\/p>\n<p>Why?
