FBI warned Year Ago of impending Malware Attacks\u2014But Didn\u2019t Share Info with Sony – The Intercept<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nearly one year before Sony was hacked, the FBI warned that U.S. companies were facing potentially crippling data destruction malware attacks, and predicted that such a hack could cause irreparable harm to a firm\u2019s reputation, or even spell the end of the company entirely. \u00a0The FBI also detailed specific guidance for U.S. companies to follow to prepare and plan for such an attack.<\/p>\n

But the FBI never sent Sony the report.<\/p>\n

The Dec. 13, 2013 FBI Intelligence Assessment, \u201cPotential Impacts of a Data-Destruction Malware Attack on a U.S. Critical Infrastructure Company\u2019s Network,\u201d warned that companies \u201cmust become prepared for the increasing possibility they could become victim to a data destruction cyber attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 16-page report includes details on previous malware attacks on South Korea banking and media companies\u2014the same incidents and characteristics the\u00a0FBI said Dec. 19th<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0that it had used to conclude that North Korea was behind the Sony attack.<\/p>\n

The report,\u00a0a copy of which was obtained by\u00a0The Intercept<\/em><\/a>, was based on discussions with private industry representatives and was prepared after the 2012 cyber attack on Saudi Aramco.\u00a0 The report was marked For Official Use Only, and has not been previously released.<\/p>\n
