{"id":34678,"date":"2018-06-03T06:42:04","date_gmt":"2018-06-03T11:42:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=34678"},"modified":"2018-06-03T06:42:04","modified_gmt":"2018-06-03T11:42:04","slug":"the-american-empire-and-its-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=34678","title":{"rendered":"The American Empire and its\u00a0Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"post-header\">\n<h3 class=\"post-title entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swprs.org\/the-american-empire-and-its-media\/\">The American Empire and its\u00a0Media<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"post-content clear\">\n<p>Largely unbeknownst to the general public, executives and top journalists of almost all major US news outlets have long been members of the influential <em><strong>Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)<\/strong>.<\/em> <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Established in 1921 as a private, bipartisan organization to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1971\/11\/21\/archives\/is-it-a-club-seminar-presidium-invisible-government-the-council-on-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cawaken America to its worldwide responsibilities\u201d<\/a>, the CFR and its close to 5000 elite members have for decades shaped U.S. foreign policy and public discourse about it. As a well-known Council member once <a href=\"http:\/\/carnegieendowment.org\/1998\/06\/01\/benevolent-empire-pub-275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>, the goal has indeed been to establish a global Empire, albeit a \u201cbenevolent\u201d one.<\/p>\n<p>Based on official membership rosters, the following illustration for the first time depicts the extensive media network of the CFR and its two main international affiliate organizations: the <em>Bilderberg Group<\/em>(covering mainly the U.S. and Europe) and the <em>Trilateral Commission<\/em> (covering North America, Europe and East Asia), both <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trilateral_commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">established<\/a> by Council leaders to foster elite cooperation at the international level.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swprs.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/08\/cfr-media-network-hdv-spr.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/swprs.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/08\/cfr-media-network-hdv-spr.png?w=736\" alt=\"CFR Media Network\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/swprs.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/08\/cfr-media-network-hdv-spr.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Click to enlarge<\/em> \ud83d\udd0e<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a column entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/opinions\/1993\/10\/30\/ruling-class-journalists\/761e7bf8-025d-474e-81cb-92dcf271571e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cRuling Class Journalists\u201d<\/a>, former <em>Washington Post<\/em> senior editor and ombudsman Richard Harwood once described the Council and its members approvingly as \u201cthe nearest thing we have to a ruling establishment in the United States\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Harwood continued: \u201cThe membership of these journalists in the Council, however they may think of themselves, is an acknowledgment of their active and important role in public affairs and of their ascension into the American ruling class. They do not merely analyze and interpret foreign policy for the United States; they help make it.
