One complaint about Trump that should be held at arm\u2019s-length by anyone on the left, however, is the charge that Trump is contributing to the decline of U.S. global power\u2014to the erosion of the United States\u2019 superpower status and the emergence of a more multipolar world.<\/p>\n<p>This criticism of Trump comes from different elite corners. Last October, the leading neoconservative foreign policy intellectual and former George W. Bush administration adviser Eliot Cohen\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2017\/10\/is-trump-ending-the-american-era\/537888\/\">wrote an Atlantic magazine essay\u00a0<\/a><\/u>titled \u201cHow Trump Is Ending the American Era.\u201d Cohen recounted numerous ways in which Trump had reduced \u201cAmerica\u2019s standing and ability to influence global affairs.\u201d He worried that Trump\u2019s presidency would leave \u201cAmerica\u2019s position in the world stunted\u201d and an \u201cAmerica lacking confidence\u201d on the global stage.<\/p>\n<p>But it isn\u2019t just the right wing that writes and speaks in such terms about how Trump is contributing to the decline of U.S. hegemony. A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/magazine\/us\/5118021\/february-5th-2018-vol-191-no-4-u-s\/\"><u>recent Time magazine reflection<\/u><\/a>\u00a0by the liberal commentator Karl Vick (who\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4649891\/protest-donald-trump\/\"><u>wrote in strongly supportive terms<\/u><\/a>\u00a0about the giant January 2017 Women\u2019s March against Trump) frets that that Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerica First\u201d and authoritarian views have the world \u201clooking for leadership elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould this be it?\u201d Vick asks. \u201cMight the American Century actually clock out at just 72 years, from 1945 to 2017? No longer than Louis XIV ruled France?
