In fact, a <a href=\"http:\/\/readynutrition.com\/resources\/us-hasnt-had-any-major-hurricanes-in-a-decade-are-you-still-prepared_08082016\/\">decade went by<\/a>without a major hurricane. But all of that changed\u00a0in 2017, when\u00a0monster hurricanes Irma and Harvey hit. Due to their unprecedented damage, the 2017 hurricane season became one of the most expensive on record. With nearly 200 billion dollars worth of damage, many were hoping for another quiet lull for this year, but forecasters say otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Two primary factors are critical for determining how active the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season will be. One is whether El Ni\u00f1o develops and the other is\u00a0the configuration of North Atlantic sea surface temperatures.\u00a0When El Ni\u00f1o conditions are present and ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific are warm, the Atlantic hurricane season tends to be less active.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/sealevel.html\">Increased sea levels<\/a>\u00a0could\u00a0also be indicative of more severe storm damage. \u201cHigher sea levels mean that deadly and destructive\u00a0storm surges\u00a0push farther inland than they once did, which also means more frequent\u00a0nuisance flooding.
