By building a firewall around China and then replacing the blocked global tech services with locally owned versions it can control, the government is able to create a digital profile of each person\u2019s actions, affiliations, statements, acts, and misdemeanors. On this, people are \u201cscored\u201d within a <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/3\/16\/17130366\/china-social-credit-travel-plane-train-tickets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/3\/16\/17130366\/china-social-credit-travel-plane-train-tickets\">\u201csocial credit\u201d system<\/a> and rewarded or penalized accordingly.<\/li>\n<li id=\"10d4\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">The recent coverage of Cambridge Analytica and Facebook shows just how much corporations in the West know about us without us knowing. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/exposed-undercover-secrets-of-donald-trump-data-firm-cambridge-analytica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/exposed-undercover-secrets-of-donald-trump-data-firm-cambridge-analytica\">The sting on Cambridge Analytica<\/a> and extensive reporting by <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/carolecadwalladr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/carolecadwalladr\">Carole Cadwalladr<\/a>, along with the Facebook Senate hearings, have shown how companies that manipulate public opinion are operating in a way that very few people, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/news\/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-hearing-congress-moments-whatsapp-twitter-a8299511.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/news\/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-hearing-congress-moments-whatsapp-twitter-a8299511.html\">and clearly not our lawmakers<\/a>, can really understand.<\/li>\n<li id=\"8ef3\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Quantum computing will soon be able to break modern encryption, laying open everything we so far thought was private and safe, and more powerful computers will be able to search and map this data going back through digital time. Yes, today\u2019s <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/610250\/hello-quantum-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/610250\/hello-quantum-world\/\">quantum computing is far off from doing this<\/a>, but think of your current iPhone compared to your first PC, and assume that somewhere in the future, computers will be more powerful and capable than anything we can imagine today.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"2a40\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li graf--trailing\">In all three scenarios, let alone all three combined, privacy is threatened on a scale we have never thought about. They are growing up in a world where everything is connected, viewable, shared.
