World May Hit 2 Degrees of Warming in 10-15 Years Thanks to Fracking, Says Cornell Scientist<\/a><\/h3>\n

In 2011, a Cornell University research team first made the groundbreaking discovery that leaking methane from the shale gas fracking boom could make burning fracked\u00a0gas worse for the climate than\u00a0coal.<\/p>\n

In a sobering lecture released this month, a member of that team,\u00a0Dr. Anthony Ingraffea, Professor of Engineering Emeritus at Cornell University, outlined\u00a0more precisely the role U.S.<\/span> fracking is playing\u00a0in changing the world’s\u00a0climate.<\/p>\n

The most recent climate data suggests that the world is on track to cross the two degrees of warming threshold set in the Paris accord\u00a0in just 10\u00a0to 15\u00a0years, says Ingraffea\u00a0in a 13-minute lecture titled \u201cShale Gas: The Technological Gamble That Should Not Have Been Taken,\u201d which was posted online on April 4.<\/p>\n

That’s if American\u00a0energy policy follows the track predicted by the U.S.<\/span> Energy Information Administration, which expects 1 million natural gas wells will be producing gas in the U.S.<\/span> in 2050, up from roughly 100,000\u00a0today.<\/p>\n

The Difference of a Half\u00a0Degree\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

An average global temperature increase of 2\u00b0\u00a0Celsius (3.6\u00b0 Fahrenheit)\u00a0will bring catastrophic changes \u2014 even as compared against a change of 1.5\u00b0 C\u00a0(2.7\u00b0\u00a0F). \u201cHeat waves would last around a third longer, rain storms would be about a third more intense, the increase in sea level would be approximately that much higher and the percentage of tropical coral reefs at risk of severe degradation would be roughly that much greater,\u201d with just that half-degree difference, NASA<\/span>‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory explained in a 2016 post<\/a> about climate\u00a0change.<\/p>\n

A draft report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC<\/span>), which was leaked<\/a> this January, concludes that it’s \u201cextremely unlikely\u201d that the world will keep to a 1.5\u00b0 change, estimating that the world will cross that threshold in roughly 20 years, somewhat slower than Ingraffea’s presentation\u00a0concludes.<\/p>\n
