In this day and age, your receipts, social media activity, public records, GPS data, and internet search history are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/romanian-court-rules-that-man-is-dead-even-though-he-isnt-2018-3\">proof of who you are<\/a>. And while you may have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\/2018\/04\/fbi-could-have-gotten-san-bernardino-shooters-iphone-leadership-didnt-say\">thought you had secrets<\/a>, the Federal Government would like <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/cybersecurity\/380896-encryption-vital-to-protecting-our-data-in-the-modern-age\">the rest of them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The seemingly innocuous pieces of information <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/873943\/in-a-world-where-data-is-for-sale-people-have-only-one-choice-reading-the-fine-print\">we trade away<\/a> every day create a detailed mosaic of our lives used to target advertising and create personality profiles that are exploited by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/wp\/law-enforcement-use-face-recognition\">FBI<\/a>, political operatives like Cambridge Analytica, and Russian propagandists.<\/p>\n<p>And those are just the legal shenanigans! Instances of malicious hacking that jeopardize social security numbers and other important data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/features\/a-list-of-the-biggest-data-leaks-over-the-last-six-months\">are on the rise as well<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But all hope is not lost! There is but one meaningful defense against such intrusions, one used by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/12\/23\/16812834\/edward-snowden-haven-guardian-project-laptop-phone\">whistleblowers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/info.townsendsecurity.com\/encryption-requirements-for-banks-financial-services\">banks<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.govtech.com\/biz\/As-Googles-Deadline-for-Web-Encryption-Looms-Many-State-and-Local-Websites-Dont-Meet-the-Standard.html\">government (often poorly)<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techadvisor.co.uk\/feature\/internet\/how-secure-is-whatsapp-whatsapp-security-encryption-explained-3637780\/\">college students<\/a>: encryption.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Encryption Is Powerful, so Naturally the Government Wants to Control It<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Encryption, to oversimplify, is the process of putting your data in a combination locked safe, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2017\/01\/half-web-now-encrypted-makes-everyone-safer\/\">it\u2019s becoming more popular<\/a>. Like all passcodes, these combinations are best stored non-electronically.<\/p>\n<p>Automatically encrypted search engines and internet services simplify the process for users.
