Dangerous climate tipping point is \u2018about a century ahead of schedule\u2019 warns scientist<\/a><\/h3>\n

A slowing Gulf Stream system means catastrophic East Coast flooding will get much worse.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

New research provides strong evidence that one of the long-predicted worst-case impacts of climate change \u2014 a severe slow-down of the Gulf Stream system \u2014 has already started.<\/div>\n

The system, also known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), brings warmer water northward while pumping cooler water southward.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re close to a tipping point,\u201d climatologist Michael Mann told ThinkProgress in an email. The AMOC slow down \u201cis without precedent\u201d in more than a millennium he said, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s happening about a century ahead of schedule relative to what the models predict.\u201d<\/p>\n

The impacts of such a slowdown include much faster sea level rise \u2014 and much warmer sea surface temperatures \u2014 for much of the U.S. East Coast. Both of those effects are already being observed and together they make devastating storm surges of the kind we saw with Superstorm Sandy far more likely<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Is Climate Change Supercharging Storms Like Jonas And Sandy More Than We Thought?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The findings come in two new studies published this week. One study published in the journal Nature<\/em>, titled \u201cObse<\/span>rv<\/span>ed fing<\/span>e<\/span>rp<\/span>rin<\/span>t of a w<\/span>eak<\/span>e<\/span>ning <\/span>A<\/span>tl<\/span>an<\/span>ti<\/span>c Ocean o<\/span>v<\/span>e<\/span>rturning c<\/span>ir<\/span>cul<\/span>a<\/span>ti<\/span><\/a>on<\/a>,\u201d was led by\u00a0the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. It\u00a0<\/span>finds that the AMOC has weakened \u201c<\/span>ar<\/span>oun<\/span>d 15 per ce<\/span>nt\u201d sin<\/span>ce <\/span><\/span><\/span>the mi<\/span>d-tw<\/span>en<\/span>tieth ce<\/span>ntury, bringing it to \u201ca new record low.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another new study in the same issue of Nature<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\u201csupports this finding and places it in a longer climate history context,\u201d as Potsdam\u2019s Stefan Rahmstorf notes at RealClimate<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
