CREDIT: MICHAEL BOCCHIERI\/GETTY IMAGES<\/figcaption><figcaption><\/figcaption><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"article-content__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<div class=\"post__content\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" data-slot=\"0\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1499467661362-13\" class=\"ad-container\">New research provides strong evidence that one of the long-predicted worst-case impacts of climate change \u2014 a severe slow-down of the Gulf Stream system \u2014 has already started.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The system, also known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), brings warmer water northward while pumping cooler water southward.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re close to a tipping point,\u201d climatologist Michael Mann told ThinkProgress in an email. The AMOC slow down \u201cis without precedent\u201d in more than a millennium he said, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s happening about a century ahead of schedule relative to what the models predict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The impacts of such a slowdown include much faster sea level rise \u2014 and much warmer sea surface temperatures \u2014 for much of the U.S. East Coast.
