Interesting Times Arrive<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThings sure are getting exciting again, ain\u2019t they?\u201d\u00a0 The remark was made by a colleague on Tuesday morning, as we stepped off the elevator to grab a cup of coffee.<\/p>\n

\"\"Ancient Chinese curse alert\u2026 [PT]<\/p>\n

\u201cOne moment markets are gorging on financial slop like fat pigs in mud.\u00a0 The next they\u2019re collectively vomiting on themselves. I\u2019ll tell you one thing.\u00a0 President Trump\u2019s trade war with China won\u2019t end well.\u00a0 I mean, come on.\u00a0 China\u2019s outplayed the U.S. at this game for over a quarter century.\u00a0 They have the upper hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cBesides, what\u2019s the point?\u00a0 If we no longer buy stuff from China, then how will China buy Uncle Sam\u2019s debt?\u00a0 And the timing for all this couldn\u2019t be worse.\u00a0 Deficits are spiraling out of control.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking $1 trillion or more a year for the next decade.\u00a0 I don\u2019t see any way out of this quagmire, do you?<\/p>\n

\u201cPrinting money to buy government debt is no solution at all.\u00a0 And a trade war will just hasten America\u2019s insolvency.\u00a0 What is it that Trump thinks he\u2019ll accomplish, anyway?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve also heard that China\u2019s tickled the debt poodle way more than we have.\u00a0 So they may be worse off at absorbing an economic shock than us.\u00a0 But I wouldn\u2019t bet my life on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, like I said, this won\u2019t end well.\u00a0 Yet there\u2019s no turning back now. The trade war genie\u2019s already out of the bottle.\u00a0 That\u2019s easy enough to see.\u00a0 And maybe President Trump is right, and a trade war with China is warranted.<\/p>\n

\"\"A joint hanging venture\u2026 [PT]<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBut in the end, something big \u2013 like a massive fighting war or worldwide depression \u2013 will need to happen before this genie can be put safely back inside the bottle.\u00a0 How do I know this?<\/p>\n
