Photograph: Linh Pham\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"content__article-body from-content-api js-article__body\" data-test-id=\"article-review-body\">\n<p><span class=\"drop-cap\"><span class=\"drop-cap__inner\">A<\/span><\/span>shattering collapse of civilisation is a \u201cnear certainty\u201d in the next few decades due to humanity\u2019s continuing destruction of the <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2018\/mar\/12\/what-is-biodiversity-and-why-does-it-matter-to-us\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">natural world that sustains all life on Earth<\/a>, according to biologist Prof Paul Ehrlich.<\/p>\n<p>In May, it will be 50 years since the eminent biologist published his most famous and controversial book, <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Population_Bomb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The Population Bomb<\/a>. Photograph: Alamy Stock Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The world\u2019s optimum population is less than two billion people \u2013 5.6 billion fewer than on the planet today, he argues, and there is an increasing toxification of the entire planet by synthetic chemicals that may be more dangerous to people and wildlife than climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Ehrlich also says an unprecedented redistribution of wealth is needed to end the over-consumption of resources, but \u201cthe rich who now run the global system \u2013 that hold the annual \u2018world destroyer\u2019 <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/davos\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">meetings in Davos<\/a> \u2013 are unlikely to let it happen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Population Bomb, written with his wife Anne Ehrlich in 1968, predicted \u201chundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death\u201d in the 1970s \u2013 a fate that was avoided by <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/green-revolution-overview-1434948\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the green revolution in intensive agriculture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many details and timings of events were wrong, Paul Ehrlich acknowledges today, but he says the book was correct overall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPopulation growth, along with over-consumption per capita, is driving civilisation over the edge: billions of people are now hungry or micronutrient malnourished, and climate disruption is killing people.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-pullquote element--supporting\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"pullquote-paragraph\">Make modern contraception and back-up abortion available to all and give women full equal rights, pay and opportunities<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Ehrlich has been at Stanford University since 1959 and is also president of the <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/mahb.stanford.edu\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Millennium Alliance for Humanity and the Biosphere<\/a>, which works \u201cto reduce the threat of a shattering collapse of civilisation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a near certainty in the next few decades, and the risk is increasing continually as long as perpetual growth of the human enterprise remains the goal of economic and political systems,\u201d he says. \u201cAs I\u2019ve said many times, \u2018perpetual growth is the creed of the cancer cell\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paul Ehrlich: &#8216;Collapse of civilisation is a near certainty within decades&#8217;
