Here I show various concepts associated with overshoot and collapse with the help of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/cassandralegacy.blogspot.it\/2017\/01\/amelie-amoeba-how-things-grow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amelie the Amoeba<\/a>&#8221; (This picture was not taken in Les Houches, but in an earlier presentation in Florence).<\/p>\n<p>Here are some commented slides from my presentation. First of all, the title:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-d1-j3n2sERI\/Wq_iF8799jI\/AAAAAAAAdwY\/PSTr1lYAmQ8UvFrSUONSlokmmuTzDLueQCLcBGAs\/s1600\/PresentationLesHouches.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-d1-j3n2sERI\/Wq_iF8799jI\/AAAAAAAAdwY\/PSTr1lYAmQ8UvFrSUONSlokmmuTzDLueQCLcBGAs\/s400\/PresentationLesHouches.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"699\" data-original-width=\"1098\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>And here is an image I often use in order to illustrate the plight of humankind, apparently engaged in the task of covering the whole planet Earth with a uniform layer of cement, transforming it into Trantor, the capital of the Galactic Empire of Asimov&#8217;s series &#8220;Foundation&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-z_jNUpez7e4\/Wq_ijrN3SAI\/AAAAAAAAdwc\/a1rjYd0f9JIrpYKN1AcGFvqzmatK1it5QCLcBGAs\/s1600\/Trantor.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-z_jNUpez7e4\/Wq_ijrN3SAI\/AAAAAAAAdwc\/a1rjYd0f9JIrpYKN1AcGFvqzmatK1it5QCLcBGAs\/s400\/Trantor.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"283\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"851\" data-original-width=\"1198\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I moved on to illustrate the &#8220;new paradigm&#8221; of resource exploitation: the idea that mineral resources never &#8220;run out&#8221;, but simply become more and more expensive, until they become too expensive.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-v1OKU5h-gNc\/Wq_jhtl9udI\/AAAAAAAAdws\/fRoNAebe0wEj4_uivVhZudKArQbfKJFBwCLcBGAs\/s1600\/DepletionParadigm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-v1OKU5h-gNc\/Wq_jhtl9udI\/AAAAAAAAdws\/fRoNAebe0wEj4_uivVhZudKArQbfKJFBwCLcBGAs\/s400\/DepletionParadigm.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"301\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"877\" data-original-width=\"1162\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>It is not a new idea, it goes back to Stanley Jevons in mid 19th century, but for some reason it is incredibly difficult to make it understandable to decision makers:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-gqvMrWVrqYM\/Wq_j-XuRYLI\/AAAAAAAAdww\/IkYdZpeVK0cPLpbAd_6_CFl69R8AX07GwCLcBGAs\/s1600\/Trumpsigns.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-gqvMrWVrqYM\/Wq_j-XuRYLI\/AAAAAAAAdww\/IkYdZpeVK0cPLpbAd_6_CFl69R8AX07GwCLcBGAs\/s400\/Trumpsigns.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"486\" data-original-width=\"741\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Then, I spoke about the Seneca effect, there is a lot to say about that, but let me just show to you one of the slides I showed during the talk: the Seneca Cliff does exist!<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-z1zQCmdSbwM\/Wq_kkl0n4kI\/AAAAAAAAdw8\/yO8GFT88gyQjEfjwqi0dHHnCj0tFqYD8gCLcBGAs\/s1600\/Senecacaviar.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-z1zQCmdSbwM\/Wq_kkl0n4kI\/AAAAAAAAdw8\/yO8GFT88gyQjEfjwqi0dHHnCj0tFqYD8gCLcBGAs\/s400\/Senecacaviar.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"303\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"826\" data-original-width=\"1084\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Fisheries are an especially good example of overexploitation (or perhaps a bad example, there is nothing good about destroying all the fish in the sea. And this leads to a rather sad observation:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-sKsZa_ayQ-U\/Wq_lENf_xSI\/AAAAAAAAdxE\/OTaJKzMiZ4sZCHwm8uhYHeGe2t83gzWvwCLcBGAs\/s1600\/GiveAManAFish.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-sKsZa_ayQ-U\/Wq_lENf_xSI\/AAAAAAAAdxE\/OTaJKzMiZ4sZCHwm8uhYHeGe2t83gzWvwCLcBGAs\/s400\/GiveAManAFish.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"772\" data-original-width=\"1183\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I also showed how the Seneca Effect can be used for good purposes, that is to get rid of things we need to get rid of. This is an image from <a href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/11\/9\/094009\/meta\">a paper<\/a> that we (Sgouris Sgouridis, Denes Csala, and myself) published in 2016.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-6Y9C1WyNhjg\/Wq_pJWmAh_I\/AAAAAAAAdxQ\/EoTnY5JaAXUFAucKhhXCo32_CMnPyN7egCLcBGAs\/s1600\/GoogSeneca.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-6Y9C1WyNhjg\/Wq_pJWmAh_I\/AAAAAAAAdxQ\/EoTnY5JaAXUFAucKhhXCo32_CMnPyN7egCLcBGAs\/s400\/GoogSeneca.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"293\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"507\" data-original-width=\"688\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>You see the Seneca cliff for the fossils, the violet part of the curve. It is what we want to happen and it would be possible to make it happen if we were willing to invest more, much more, in renewable energy. But, apparently, there is no such idea on the table, so the future doesn&#8217;t look so good.<\/p>\n<p>But never mind. We keep going and, eventually, we&#8217;ll arrive somewhere.
