A World War Might Sound Crazy, but It Could Be America\u2019s Last Act of Desperation<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

(<\/b>ANTIMEDIA\u00a0<\/b><\/a>Op-ed)<\/b>\u2014<\/i>\u00a0Though\u00a0some<\/a>\u00a0have been\u00a0warning<\/a>\u00a0about the catastrophic potential for a third global conflict for years, it wasn\u2019t until\u00a0recently<\/a>\u00a0that these warnings became\u00a0more mainstream<\/a>. The calamitous nature of the violence in Syria\u00a0\u2014 which has one nuclear power defending a government that has been the target of a regime change operation led by the world\u2019s superpower\u00a0\u2014 combined with 2017\u2019s threats of\u00a0\u201cfire and fury\u201d<\/a>\u00a0against another state intently pursuing a nuclear weapons supply of its own, has pushed the\u00a0issue of a third world war<\/a>\u00a0directly into the\u00a0public discourse<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While certain hotspots throughout the Middle East, Asia, and Eastern Europe (i.e.\u00a0Ukraine<\/a>) have seen some notable escalations in the last few years, a direct conflict between Russia and the United States is still yet to emerge. That\u2019s because the idea of a third world war in today\u2019s world is completely insane. If the two countries that currently possess the world\u2019s greatest supplies of nuclear weapons go to war,\u00a0there may not be a world left<\/a>\u00a0for the victors to inhabit after the war is done, thereby making it an unthinkable proposal.<\/p>\n

Then again, the U.S. did just recently bomb a\u00a0significant number<\/a>\u00a0of Russian-linked forces in Syria, reportedly killing scores of them. The targets of these air strikes were also\u00a0predominantly Iranian-backed militias<\/a>\u00a0(just in case there weren\u2019t enough state actors already involved in this ongoing conflict).<\/p>\n

Speaking of Iran, Donald Trump recently fired Rex Tillerson as secretary of state and immediately appointed CIA director Mike Pompeo to replace him. Pompeo is a\u00a0notable anti-Iran hawk<\/a>\u00a0who will almost certainly go further than Tillerson was\u00a0ever prepared<\/a>\u00a0to go with regard to the Iranian nuclear accord, a deal Pompeo believes is \u201cdisastrous.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are also reports now emerging that Donald Trump is\u00a0planning<\/a>\u00a0to oust his national security advisor, General H.R. McMaster. McMaster originally replaced anti-Iran war hawk\u00a0Michael Flynn<\/a>, but apparently, McMaster\u2019s\u00a0non-stop allegations<\/a>\u00a0against Iran were\u00a0not enough to please Trump<\/a>. McMaster was not on board with Trump\u2019s attempt to completely derail the Iranian nuclear deal.<\/p>\n
