Facebook \u2018Hid Webpages\u2019 And Bragged About Ability To Influence Elections<\/a><\/h3>\n

While many leftists in the United States are still screeching about \u201celection meddling\u201d by Russia, they may want to take a long look at Facebook.\u00a0 The social media giant actually hid webpages and bragged about its ability to influence elections.<\/p>\n

According to The Intercept,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>when Mark Zuckerberg\u00a0was asked if\u00a0Facebook had influenced the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, the founder, and CEO\u00a0dismissed\u00a0<\/a>the notion that the site even had such power as \u201ccrazy.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0It\u00a0was a disingenuous remark. Facebook\u2019s website had, in fact, an entire section devoted to touting the \u201csuccess stories\u201d of political campaigns that used\u00a0the social network to influence electoral outcomes.<\/strong> That page, however, is now gone, even as the 2018 congressional primaries get underway.<\/p>\n

On the heels of a public reckoning with Facebook\u2019s unparalleled ability to distribute information, obvious censorship,<\/a> and global anxiety over election meddling,<\/a> bragging about the company\u2019s ability to run highly effective influence campaigns (propaganda campaigns) probably doesn\u2019t look very good for Facebook.<\/p>\n

The social media giant\u2019s \u201csuccess stories\u201d<\/a> page\u00a0is\u00a0a monument to the company\u2019s dominance of online advertising. It provided users with examples from almost every imaginable industry of how the use of the social network gave certain players an advantage. \u201cCase studies like these inspire and motivate us,\u201d <\/a>the page crows. Current examples include CoverGirl (\u201cpromoting a beauty brand makeover with video ads on Facebook and Instagram\u201d) and Tropicana (\u201cFacebook video ads elevate fruit juice brand awareness\u201d). Not so controversial\u2026anymore.\u00a0 Because Facebook hid the part where they influenced elections.<\/p>\n
