Exxon is legally challenging cities and counties\u00a0for not talking up the risks of climate change <em>enough<\/em> to the investors who purchase municipal bonds for those localities. Has Exxon had a change of heart and now become concerned about transparency and the impacts of climate\u00a0change?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a closer look.<\/p>\n<p>Exxon is responding to the municipalities which have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/legal-us-usa-oil-climatesuits\/california-cities-sue-big-oil-firms-over-climate-change-idUSKCN1BV2QM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed lawsuits <\/a>seeking to hold Exxon and other oil companies accountable for the damages\u00a0to their cities from sea level rise. Exxon&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/4345487-Exxon-Texas-Petition-Jan-2018.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal petition<\/a>\u00a0is calling those lawsuits a \u201cconspiracy\u201d because \u2014 according to its petition \u2014\u00a0\u201cA collection of special interests and opportunistic politicians are abusing law enforcement authority and legal process to impose their viewpoint on climate\u00a0change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The oil giant goes on to say: \u201cExxonMobil finds itself directly in that conspiracy\u2019s crosshairs.
