\u2018Descent Into Hell\u2019: China Warns of Potential War With US Over Taiwan<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n

(<\/b>ANTIMEDIA<\/b><\/a>)<\/b>\u00a0\u2014<\/i>\u00a0It\u2019s no secret that for Beijing, the most\u00a0sensitive<\/a>\u00a0issue within Sino-American relations is that of Taiwan, the semi-autonomous island territory that China considers to be a breakaway province. Now, a political\u00a0move<\/a>\u00a0made by the U.S. on Taiwan has Beijing warning of the possibility of military action.<\/p>\n

Back in January, the House of Representatives unanimously\u00a0passed<\/a>\u00a0the Taiwan Travel Act, a bill aiming to significantly strengthen ties between U.S. officials and their Taiwanese counterparts. The bill reached the Senate floor on Wednesday, where it also\u00a0passed<\/a>\u00a0without opposition. Now, all that\u2019s required for the legislation to become law is Donald Trump\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n

Taiwan welcomed the bill\u2019s passage. Speaking to reporters in the capital of Taipei, Premier William Lai\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0the U.S. is a \u201csolid ally\u201d of Taiwan and that the two sides\u2019 ties can now become even stronger.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wholeheartedly anticipate that this law can in the future further raise the substantive relationship between Taiwan and the United States,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0Lai said.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, China had an altogether different reaction \u2014 one that included a warning to its neighbor and a hint at military confrontation if things continue to progress in this manner.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are firmly against the act,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0China\u2019s state-run\u00a0Xinhua News Agency<\/i>\u00a0quoted<\/a>\u00a0Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson An Fengshan as saying.\u00a0\u201cWe sternly warn Taiwan not to rely on foreigners to build you up, or it will only draw fire against yourself.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

The U.S.\u00a0cut<\/a>\u00a0formal ties to Taiwan when it recognized Beijing as the Chinese capital in 1979. This event marked official acceptance of the \u201cone China\u201d policy, which\u00a0regards<\/a>\u00a0Taiwan as a Chinese territory.<\/p>\n

But Beijing has grown increasingly\u00a0concerned<\/a>\u00a0over what it views as Taipei\u2019s push toward independence since the election of President Tsai Ing-wen in 2016.<\/p>\n
