{"id":31873,"date":"2018-03-03T09:43:42","date_gmt":"2018-03-03T14:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=31873"},"modified":"2018-03-03T09:43:42","modified_gmt":"2018-03-03T14:43:42","slug":"drilling-and-mining-interests-pushed-to-shrink-utah-national-monuments-documents-reveal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=31873","title":{"rendered":"Drilling and Mining Interests Pushed to Shrink Utah National Monuments, Documents Reveal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2018\/03\/02\/drilling-mining-interests-pushed-shrink-utah-national-monuments-zinke\">Drilling and Mining Interests Pushed to Shrink Utah National Monuments, Documents Reveal<\/a><\/h3>\n<article class=\"node-12695 node node-blog node-promoted view-mode-full clearfix\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-bimage field-type-image field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/Cedar-Mesa-Citadel-Ruins-bears-ears_credit-blm.jpg?itok=CMISJvln\" alt=\"Cedar Mesa Citadel Ruins at Bears Ears National Monument\" width=\"826\" height=\"551\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>Even though Interior Secretary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/ryan-zinke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryan Zinke<\/a>\u00a0insisted \u201cthis is not about energy,\u201d environmentalists and public lands advocates have long suspected the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/trump-watch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump<\/a>\u00a0administration&#8217;s cuts to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/national-monuments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national monuments<\/a>\u00a0were driven by its push for more drilling, mining and other\u00a0development.<\/p>\n<p>Now, internal Interior Department documents obtained by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/02\/climate\/bears-ears-national-monument.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fclimate&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=climate&amp;region=stream&amp;module=stream_unit&amp;version=latest&amp;contentPlacement=1&amp;pgtype=sectionfront&amp;referer=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>\u00a0show that gaining access to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/oil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oil<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/natural-gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">natural gas<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/uranium-mining-health-2538101514.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uranium<\/a>\u00a0deposits in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/bears-ears\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bears Ears<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/coal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coal<\/a>\u00a0reserves in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/grand-staircase-escalante\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grand Staircase-Escalante<\/a>\u00a0were indeed key reasons behind President Trump&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/trump-utah-national-monuments-2514084239.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drastic cuts<\/a>\u00a0to the two monuments in\u00a0Utah.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2017, an aide to Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) asked a senior Interior Department official to consider reduced boundaries for Bears Ears to remove land that contained oil and natural gas deposits. Hatch&#8217;s office sent a map depicting a boundary change for the southeast portion of the Bears Ears monument to \u201cresolve all known mineral conflicts,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/4391967-National-Monuments-a-Look-at-the-Debate-From.html#document\/p55\/a407696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the email said, referring to oil and gas sites<\/a>\u00a0on the land that the state&#8217;s public schools wanted to lease out to increase state\u00a0funds.<\/p>\n<p>As the Times reported, the map that Hatch&#8217;s office provided\u2014and notably sent about a month before Sec. Zinke publicly initiated his review of national monuments in April\u2014was incorporated almost exactly into the much larger reductions President Trump would later\u00a0announce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/trump-utah-national-monuments-2514759911.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In December<\/a>, despite\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/oppose-national-monuments-review-2476207979.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">widespread public support<\/a>\u00a0to preserve protections for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/tag\/public-lands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public lands<\/a>, Trump announced he was gutting the 1.35 million-acre Bears Ears to only 201,397 acres and the 1.87 million-acre Grand Staircase-Escalante to just 997,490 acres.
