Will the Center hold?<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

The photo above is William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Second Coming\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning and turning in the widening gyre<\/p>\n

the falcon cannot hear the falconer;<\/p>\n

things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;<\/p>\n

mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,<\/p>\n

the blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere<\/p>\n

the ceremony of innocence is drowned;<\/p>\n

the best lack all conviction, while the worst<\/p>\n

are full of passionate intensity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surely some revelation is at hand;<\/p>\n

surely the Second Coming is at hand.<\/p>\n

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out<\/p>\n

when a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi<\/p>\n

troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;<\/p>\n

a shape with lion body and the head of a man,<\/p>\n

a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,<\/p>\n

is moving its slow thighs, while all about it<\/p>\n

wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.<\/p>\n

The darkness drops again but now I know<\/p>\n

that twenty centuries of stony sleep<\/p>\n

were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,<\/p>\n

and what rough beast, its hour come round at last,<\/p>\n

slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?\u201d<\/p>\n

I find there is something visceral about Yeat\u2019s poem \u201cThe Second Coming\u201d, his\u00a0 words and phrases reach into my gut, grab hold, and demand my attention.\u00a0 His poem has been often quoted when people write about social change.\u00a0 \u201cThings fall apart; the centre cannot hold\u2026 The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.\u201d\u00a0 These lines seem to perfectly describe events unfolding today.\u00a0 Yeats wrote this poem after the end of the First World War, a time of great social and civil unrest.\u00a0 The poem captures more than just political unrest and violence of his time.<\/p>\n
