Even climate change experts and activists might be in denial<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Another month, another important\u00a0UN climate change conference<\/a>. The latest is in Lima, the capital of Peru.\u00a0Thousands of experts<\/a>\u00a0from the world of politics, business, academia and civil society \u2013 and\u00a0Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 have flown around the world to urge us all to curb our carbon emissions.<\/p>\n

Recent meetings<\/a>\u00a0have failed to make significant progress. Yet, this year there are\u00a0high hopes<\/a>\u00a0that the\u00a0US-China climate deal<\/a>\u00a0and the New York\u00a0UN Climate Summit<\/a>\u00a0will allow Lima to provide a stepping stone for a binding emissions agreement at next year\u2019s meeting in Paris.<\/p>\n

However, even if a deal can be reached \u2013 despite the\u00a0urgent need<\/a>\u00a0for it \u2013 there is no guarantee that global greenhouse gas emissions will actually come down significantly and dangerous climate change can be averted. Psychoanalytic theory provides disturbing insights into why this may be so \u2013 and it is all to do with the split psychological make-up of those who work at the forefront of climate science, policy and activism.<\/p>\n
