The underground bunker is a long-term seed storage facility, built to keep its three vaults cool for 200-years \u2014 and can survive natural or human-made disasters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Doomsday-seed-768x623.jpg?itok=NdCjwW3n\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The doomsday vault serves as a storage facility for more than 850,000 seed samples, according to the Public Radio Institute, which the three vault rooms are cooled to -18\u00a0\u00b0C (-3 \u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p>Cary Fowler, the founder of Svalbard Global Seed Vault, calls the facility,<em><strong> \u201cthe backup insurance policy for all the seed banks around the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is that we want to provide fail-safe protection for the diversity of our agricultural crops, diversity that is stored in the form of seeds,\u201d Fowler says.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cYou need freezing temperatures to conserve seeds long term. So we went close to the north pole, where it\u2019s\u00a0very cold, and we built a facility inside of a mountain, which makes it also very secure. There we\u2019re storing backup copies \u2014 seed samples of, currently, more than 850,000 different crop varieties,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-24-at-3.37.32-PM-768x507.png?itok=OOyU1gSq\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-24-at-3.37.32-PM-768x507.png?itok=OOyU1gSq\" data-link-option=\"0\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-images\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-24-at-3.37.32-PM-768x507.png?itok=OOyU1gSq\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Norway\u2019s\u00a0Minister of Agriculture and Food Jon Georg Dale said,<strong><em> \u201cthe upgrades, which we hope to begin presently, will ensure that the Svalbard Global Seed Vault can continue to offer the world\u2019s\u00a0gene banks a secure storage space in the future.
