This will impact both 4th quarter and first quarter GDP estimates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"markdown\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>On February 22, Bloomberg reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-02-22\/canada-retail-sales-unexpectedly-drop-at-end-of-a-banner-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Retail Sales Drop Unexpectedly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"markdown\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Receipts fell 0.8 percent to C$49.6 billion in the last month of 2017, Statistics Canada reported Thursday. It was the biggest monthly decline since March 2016. On the year, sales were up by 1.6 per cent, from 1.4 per cent, far below expectations for a 2.6 per cent rise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"markdown\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>On January 31, Reuters reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/germany-economy-retail\/german-retail-sales-fall-unexpectedly-in-december-idUSS8N1PA00M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">German Retail Sales Unexpectedly Fall in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"markdown\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>On February 6, Business Insider reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com.au\/australia-retail-sales-december-2017-2018-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian retail spending for the Christmas was far weaker than many were expecting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"markdown\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Given the Fed&#8217;s outlook and increasing expectations of four rate hikes plus tapering in the US, tapering in the EU, and rate hikes in the UK, such reports must be meaningless.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"markdown\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Also note the IMF made a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Publications\/WEO\/Issues\/2018\/01\/11\/world-economic-outlook-update-january-2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brighter Forecast<\/a>&#8221; for the global economy in January.
