TIMES VIA GETTY IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"article-content__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<div class=\"post__content\">\n<p>The evidence is now overwhelming that <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/nasa-study-fracking-global-warming-0fa0c5b5f5c7\/\">natural gas\u00a0is not part of the climate solution<\/a>, it is part of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/energy\/explore-pennsylvanias-oil-and-gas-pollution\">new study<\/a>\u00a0finds that the methane escaping from Pennsylvania\u2019s oil and gas industry\u00a0\u201ccauses the same near-term climate pollution as 11 coal-fired power plants.\u201d And that\u00a0is \u201cfive times higher than what oil and gas companies report\u201d to the state, according to analysis from the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) based on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/energy\/methodology-estimating-untracked-emissions\">16 peer-reviewed studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Natural gas is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/romm\/2011\/04\/13\/207884\/natural-gas-is-mostly-methane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mostly methane<\/a>,\u00a0a super-potent greenhouse gas, which traps\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2013\/10\/02\/2708911\/fracking-ipcc-methane\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">86 times<\/a>\u00a0as much heat as CO2 over a 20-year period.
