Stunning new research finds fracking a major source of carbon pollution in Pennsylvania<\/a><\/h3>\n

Methane leaks in the state’s oil and gas industry equal 11 coal-fired power plants.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The evidence is now overwhelming that natural gas\u00a0is not part of the climate solution<\/a>, it is part of the problem.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0new study<\/a>\u00a0finds that the methane escaping from Pennsylvania\u2019s oil and gas industry\u00a0\u201ccauses the same near-term climate pollution as 11 coal-fired power plants.\u201d And that\u00a0is \u201cfive times higher than what oil and gas companies report\u201d to the state, according to analysis from the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) based on\u00a016 peer-reviewed studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Natural gas is\u00a0mostly methane<\/a>,\u00a0a super-potent greenhouse gas, which traps\u00a086 times<\/a>\u00a0as much heat as CO2 over a 20-year period. So\u00a0even a small leakage rate<\/a>\u00a0from the natural gas supply chain (production to delivery to combustion) can have a large climate impact\u200a \u2014 \u200aenough to gut the entire benefit of switching from coal-fired power to gas for a long, long time.<\/p>\n

Yet even though\u00a0many earlier studies<\/a>\u00a0have found that\u00a0natural gas production spews out huge amounts of carbon pollution all across the country,\u00a0just last week<\/a>, the Trump administration moved to undo an Obama-era rule aimed at limiting the methane leakage from gas and oil production on public lands.<\/p>\n
