#333333; font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"post_content\">\n<p class=\"p3\">On 30 January, the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/jan\/30\/uk-mass-digital-surveillance-regime-ruled-unlawful-appeal-ruling-snoopers-charter\"><span class=\"s1\">Court of Appeal<\/span><\/a> ruled that the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act of 2014 (DRIPA), which made way for the Investigatory Powers Act of 2016 (<span class=\"s2\">IPA<\/span>), did not restrict the access of confidential personal phone and web browsing records to investigations of serious crime. <span class=\"s2\">The IPA means that Internet service providers must now store details of everything we do online for twelve months and render it accessible to dozens of public bodies.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">This data can be virtually everything, from browsing records to personal information on private citizens, to include but not limited to:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/11\/23\/13718768\/uk-surveillance-laws-explained-investigatory-powers-bill\"><span class=\"s3\">search engine activity<\/span><\/a>, every\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/askjack\/2016\/nov\/24\/how-can-i-protect-myself-from-government-snoopers\"><span class=\"s3\">phone call to text message plus geographical location<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\">, private financial and<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/repair.credit\/the-truth-about-credit\/\"><span class=\"s1\">credit repair services<\/span><\/a>, personal correspondence, <a href=\"https:\/\/cysec-rco.com\/tag\/snoopers-charter\/\"><span class=\"s1\">medical records<\/span><\/a>,<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twobirds.com\/en\/news\/articles\/2016\/uk\/what-the-investigatory-powers-bill-would-mean-for-your-business\"><span class=\"s1\">banking, insurance, and investment services<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0which is stored on computers and mobile telephones.\u00a0 This law <i>obliges<\/i> technology companies to hand over the data that they have about private citizens to intelligence agencies and it can force tech companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com.au\/article\/632097\/encryption-crackdown-government-putting-finishing-touches-legislation\/\"><span class=\"s6\">Apple<\/span><\/a> to remove encryption, ultimately weakening the security of their own products in total secrecy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">The ability of the government to spy on private citizens\u2019 includes the encroachment upon the fundamental rights of privacy in financial matters, such that a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/comment-analysis\/2017\/12\/05\/super-spy-search-engine-still-being-pursued-in-the-shadows\"><span class=\"s6\">super-spy search engine<\/span><\/a>\u201d has become part of the arsenal that the Home Office is accused of hosting.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What does surveillance mean in an era where financial information needs to be safeguarded and when economic interests such as<span class=\"s5\"> crypto robots and <a href=\"https:\/\/etfdailynews.com\/2018\/01\/29\/why-cryptocurrencies-are-still-no-substitute-for-gold-gld\/\"><span class=\"s1\">cryptocurrencies<\/span><\/a> could face government spying?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s step back to 2004, when philosopher Giorgio Agamben refused to submit passport biodata in 2004 in the United States when he <a href=\"https:\/\/ratical.org\/ratville\/CAH\/totalControl.html\"><span class=\"s1\">famously rescinded<\/span><\/a> his appointment to lecture at New York University.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Resisting the submission of fingerprints required to enter<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">the United States as a foreign visitor, Agamben\u2019s actions then foreshadowed what he would later address in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronosmag.eu\/index.php\/g-agamben-for-a-theory-of-destituent-power.html\"><span class=\"s1\">2013 Athens
