Recently it was my birthday (I\u2019m not going to say what date that was, for reasons which will become clear later) and when I did a Google search, I was surprised to find a \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d greeting from Google, complete with an image of candles.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know how Google knew that, but I was busy at the time, I couldn\u2019t be bothered looking into it and I just wrote it off as one of those \u201cweird web\u201d things.<\/p>\n

The issue surfaced again more recently in a more sinister form when I tried to delete an online \u201cprofile photo\u201d of myself stored in my Google account.\u00a0 There was nothing particularly sinister about the photo, just a standard head and shoulders shot, but it was out of date and not particularly flattering and I thought \u201clet\u2019s get rid of it then\u201d.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t.\u00a0 I spent an hour trying to delete that photo when it was the Christmas holidays and I had better things to do.\u00a0 I consider myself a fairly proficient Internet user, but I tried everything I could think of to delete that photo without success.\u00a0 First I tried following all the obvious links to things like \u201cmy account\u201d, \u201cmy profile\u201d, \u201cupdate details\u201d, \u201cimages\u201d and so on.\u00a0 I right clicked and left clicked on the picture and hit the \u201cdelete\u201d button many, many times.\u00a0 I tried to replace it by uploading a neutral landscape photo.\u00a0 It was very easy to upload a new photo, but impossible to delete the one which was already there: I just found that both photos were then stored in my Google account.\u00a0 I tried Googling for \u201chow to delete your Google profile photo\u201d and found some instructions, but when I tried to follow them, they didn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n
