{"id":31228,"date":"2018-02-19T10:55:25","date_gmt":"2018-02-19T15:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=31228"},"modified":"2018-02-19T10:55:25","modified_gmt":"2018-02-19T15:55:25","slug":"turkey-threatens-to-invade-greece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=31228","title":{"rendered":"Turkey Threatens to Invade Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"print_content\">\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatestoneinstitute.org\/11907\/turkey-greece-invasion\">Turkey Threatens to Invade Greece<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"byline\">\n<p class=\"sans-serif\">Turkey&#8217;s ruling party, and even much of the opposition, seem intent on, if not obsessed with, invading and conquering these Greek islands, on the grounds that they are actually Turkish territory.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"print_content_3\">\n<div>\n<ul class=\"content_preface_bullets\">\n<li>&#8220;The things we have done so far [pale in comparison to the] even greater attempts and attacks [we are planning for] the coming days, <i>inshallah<\/i> [Allah willing].&#8221; \u2013 Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan, February 12, 2018.<\/li>\n<li>The head of the state-funded Directorate of Religious Affairs, the <i>Diyanet<\/i>, has openly described Turkey&#8217;s recent military invasion of Afrin as &#8220;jihad.&#8221; This designation makes sense when one considers that Muslim Turks owe their demographic majority in Asia Minor to centuries of Turkish persecution and discrimination against the Christian, Yazidi and Jewish inhabitants of the area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article_body itemprop_articlebody\">\n<p>In an incident that took place less than two weeks after the Greek Defense Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/376003-turkey-violated-greece-airspace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that Turkey had violated Greek airspace 138 times in a single day, a Turkish coast guard patrol boat on February 13 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ekathimerini.com\/225780\/article\/ekathimerini\/news\/turkish-coast-guard-vessel-rams-greek-patrol-boat-off-imia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rammed a Greek coast guard vessel<\/a> off the shore of Imia, one of many Greek islands over which Turkey claims sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the areas within modern Greece&#8217;s current borders were under the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ottoman_Greece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">occupation of the Ottoman Empire<\/a> from the mid-15th century until the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and the establishment of the modern Greek state in 1832.
