Brazil\u2019s Largest Newspaper Abandons Facebook; Says News Feed is \u201cBanning Professional Journalism\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil\u2014 The largest newspaper in Brazil, Folha de S Paulo, announced<\/a>\u00a0late last week that due to Facebook\u2019s recent changes to their news feed algorithm resulting in what the paper claims is \u201ceffectively banning professional journalism,\u201d it would cease publishing content on the social media platform.<\/div>\n

The Guardian reported<\/a> that the popular Brazilian newspaper has an online and print subscription base of nearly 285,000 subscribers and had roughly 204 million page impressions last December, according to the Communication Verification Institute, a non-profit media auditor. The company\u2019s Facebook page has nearly<\/a> 6 million Facebook followers.<\/p>\n

The executive editor of Fohla, S\u00e9rgio D\u00e1vila, told The Guardian that the paper\u2019s decision reflected \u201cthe declining importance of Facebook to our readers,\u201d but added that the recent algorithm changes to Facebook\u2019s Newsfeed had precipitated the decision.\u00a0The paper claimed the new algorithm \u201cprivilege[s] personal interaction contents, to the detriment of those distributed by companies, such as those that produce professional journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Only weeks ago, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook\u2019s co-founder and CEO, announced<\/a> that the company would be changing the algorithm used to determine what shows up in an individual\u2019s Newsfeed to prioritize \u201cmeaningful social interactions\u201d and posts by friends, and \u201ctrusted\u201d news sources.<\/p>\n

Folha noted that the choice to abandon Facebook was \u201ca reflection of internal discussions about the best ways to get the content of the newspaper to reach its readers. The disadvantages of using Facebook as a path to this distribution became more evident after the social network\u2019s decision to reduce the visibility of professional journalism on its users\u2019 pages.\u201d<\/p>\n

A separate report<\/a> in Folha noted that the newspaper\u2019s own analysis found that \u201cfake news pages received five times the number of engagements that professional journalism received\u201d during the month of January.<\/p>\n
