Solar Storm Will Strike Earth Tonight, \u2018Weak Power Grid Fluctuations\u2019 Possible<\/a><\/h3>\n

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center\u00a0forecasts<\/a>\u00a0an aurora could<\/a>\u00a0light up the sky above areas in the United State including Michigan and Maine.\u00a0 A solar storm, which occurred Monday, is expected to strike Earth tonight.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the sun spit out a slew of charged particles in\u00a0a moderate solar flare<\/a>. These particles are now making their way towards Earth. The planet\u2019s magnetic field will block most of the particles, but\u00a0some will make it\u00a0into Earth\u2019s atmosphere. The particles collect at the north and south poles and interact with atmospheric gases to create the aurora borealis or the Northern Lights. And some say this show could be quite spectacular.<\/p>\n

Solar flares have been known to cause power grid failures, but it looks like we\u2019ll only get the light show this time. Although a grid failure is possible, it is unlikely.<\/p>\n

According to Seeker,<\/em><\/a> the forecast calls for a high probability of a G-1 or \u201cminor\u201d storm, which could strengthen to a G-2 or \u201cmoderate\u201d storm depending on how the stream of particles hit the Earth. Geomagnetic storms are\u00a0ranked on a scale<\/a>, with G at the bottom, R in the middle, and S as the most severe. Forecasts now say the particles will give our planet a glancing blow.<\/p>\n

Although this storm has been categorized as \u201cG-1,\u201d\u00a0which means it is minor<\/a>, it could still cause some havoc down on Earth.\u00a0Solar flares and particle ejections<\/a>\u00a0are associated with sunspots \u2014 dark areas on the sun\u2019s surface <\/a>\u2014 that host intense magnetic activity. As the magnetic fields in a sunspot cross,\u00a0NASA stated<\/a>, this can cause a sudden energy explosion, also known as a solar flare. This sends radiation out into space, and that radiation can be hurled toward the Earth.<\/p>\n
