What Does China\u2019s \u201cEcological Civilization\u201d Mean for Humanity\u2019s\u00a0Future?<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

China\u2019s leader, Xi Jinping, affirms an ecological vision that is in line with progressive environmental thought. Is it mere rhetoric or does it have a deeper resonance within Chinese culture? The answer may ultimately have a profound effect on humanity\u2019s future.<\/em><\/p>\n

Imagine a newly elected President of the United States calling in his inaugural speech for an \u201cecological civilization\u201d that ensures \u201charmony between human and nature.\u201d\u00a0 Now imagine he goes on to declare that \u201cwe, as human beings, must respect nature, follow its ways, and protect it\u201d and that his administration will \u201cencourage simple, moderate, green, and low-carbon ways of life, and oppose extravagance and excessive consumption.\u201d Dream on, you might say. Even in the more progressive Western European nations, it\u2019s hard to find a political leader who would make such a stand.<\/p>\n

And yet, the leader of the world\u2019s second largest economy, Xi Jinping of China, made these statements and more in his address<\/a> to the National Congress of the Communist Party in Beijing last October. He went on to specify in more detail his plans to \u201cstep up efforts to establish a legal and policy framework\u2026 that facilitates green, low-carbon, and circular development,\u201d to \u201cpromote afforestation,\u201d \u201cstrengthen wetland conservation and restoration,\u201d and \u201ctake tough steps to stop and punish all activities that damage the environment.\u201d Closing his theme with a flourish, he proclaimed that \u201cwhat we are doing today\u201d is \u201cto build an ecological civilization that will benefit generations to come.\u201d Transcending parochial boundaries, he declared that his Party\u2019s abiding mission was to \u201cmake new and greater contributions to mankind\u2026 for both the wellbeing of the Chinese people and human progress.\u201d<\/p>\n
