Hedge Fund Manager Who Remembers 1998 Rout Says Prepare for Pain – Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Stephen Jen landed in\u00a0Hong Kong<\/a>\u00a0in early January 1997 as Morgan Stanley\u2019s newly minted exchange-rate strategist for Asia.<\/p>\n

He was soon working around the clock when investors began targeting the region\u2019s currency pegs, first felling\u00a0Thailand<\/a>\u2019s in July. The rout spread through Asia before rocking\u00a0Brazil<\/a>\u00a0andRussia<\/a>. It led to the collapse of Long-Term Capital Management, an event that introduced the Federal Reserve-brokered bailout.<\/p>\n

If the 48-year-old native of\u00a0Taiwan<\/a>, with a PhD from\u00a0Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/a>, sounds a little jaded now, it\u2019s not without some reason. He says he worries that many emerging-market analysts are too young to remember the late 1990s. Instead they learned the ropes in an era dominated by the rise of Brazil, Russia, India and China — a supposed one-way bet to prosperity.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany became EM specialists after the term \u2018BRIC\u2019 was coined in 2001 and don\u2019t know any serious crisis,\u2019\u2019 says Jen, who now runs the London-based hedge fund SLJ Macro Partners LLP.<\/p>\n
