Russia Officially Accuses the US of Planning to Partition Syria<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

(MEMO<\/a>)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday accused<\/a> the US of planning to partition Syria.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlans of de facto partition of Syria exist. We know about it and will ask our American colleagues how they do imagine all this,\u201d Lavrov said during a speech at \u201cLeaders of Russia\u201d contest.<\/p>\n

He also said Americans were changing their stance about the reason for their presence in Syria.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmericans seem to have abandoned assurances given to us that the only purpose of their presence in Syria is to defeat terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow they say this presence will remain until they are convinced that Syria has begun a sustainable process of political settlement, the result of which will be regime change,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011 when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests \u2014 which erupted as part of the \u201cArab Spring\u201d uprisings \u2014 with unexpected ferocity.<\/p>\n

Since then, more than a quarter of a million people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced across the war-battered country, according to the UN.<\/p>\n

The Syrian Center for Policy Research, however, put the death toll from the conflict at more than 470,000 people.<\/p>\n
