Trump. \u201cA man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet four months later, in November 2016, almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/12\/21\/politics\/donald-trump-hillary-clinton-popular-vote-final-count\/index.html\">63 million<\/a> of her fellow Americans voted to put the short-tempered, thin-skinned former reality TV star in charge of their country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Inventories2017-2.png\">6,800 nuclear warheads<\/a>. Never forget: As president of the nuclear-armed United States, Trump \u2014\u00a0<em>Trump<\/em>! \u2014 has the power to destroy humanity <a href=\"http:\/\/denver.cbslocal.com\/2014\/03\/26\/study-small-nuclear-war-would-destroy-the-world\/\">many times over<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalzero.org\/blog\/how-many-nukes-would-it-take-render-earth-uninhabitable\">rendering the planet uninhabitable<\/a> in the process.<\/p>\n<p>If that wasn\u2019t terrifying enough, last week, less than 72 hours after\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/president-donald-j-trumps-state-union-address\/\">State of the Union speech<\/a>, in which\u00a0Trump ramped up his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2018\/01\/trump-north-korea-sotu-cha\/551933\/\">war of words<\/a> with North Korea, his administration announced that it wanted to make it much easier for the president to start a nuclear holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>You might have missed that rather important piece of news. Last Friday, while cable news channels rolled on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/02\/02\/politics\/what-nunes-memo-means\/index.html\">Nunes memo<\/a>, the Pentagon published the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/admin.govexec.com\/media\/gbc\/docs\/pdfs_edit\/2018_nuclear_posture_review_-_final_report.pdf\">Nuclear Posture Review, or NPR<\/a>, which includes two pretty alarming new components.<\/p>\n<p>First, while Barack Obama\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/Portals\/1\/features\/defenseReviews\/NPR\/2010_Nuclear_Posture_Review_Report.pdf\">2010 NPR<\/a> for the first time ruled out a nuclear attack against non-nuclear weapon states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty, Trump\u2019s NPR goes in the opposite direction and suggests that the U.S. could employ nuclear weapons in \u201cextreme circumstances\u201d to defend the \u201cvital interests\u201d of the United States and its allies.
