The Turkish Interior Ministry<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-mideast-crisis-syria-turkey-security\/turkey-detains-nearly-600-for-opposing-syrian-offensive-idUSKBN1FP109\"> now says 449 people have been detained for criticizing the war on social media, and 124 more detained<\/a> for taking part in actual protests.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72284\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/069.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72284\" src=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/069.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 85vw, 320px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/069.jpg 320w, https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/069-300x205.jpg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"219\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Riot police detain a demonstrator during a protest against Turkey\u2019s military operation in Syria\u2019s Afrin region, in Istanbul, Turkey<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Turkey\u2019s Erdogan government doesn\u2019t have a lot of patience for dissent, or for Kurds. Unsurprisingly, dissent about a war against Kurds is being cracked down on intensely. Erdogan\u2019s spokesman warned that statements criticizing the war amount to statements \u201cglorifying terrorism,\u201d and that the government is just enforcing the law as written.<\/p>\n<p>With Turkey\u2019s largely state-run media praising the war, public support for it is still relatively strong. Opposition is mostly in the ethnic Kurdish region, which Turkey is more than willing to crack down on at any rate, and political opponents.<\/p>\n<p>When other NGOs issue statements against the war, as did a medical union in the country, President Erdogan has condemned them as traitors, and arrested 11 of their senior members for a statement calling for \u201cpeace immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the war continuing and casualties rising, war exhaustion is inevitable.
